“…I want you boys to remember to change your socks wherever we stop. The Mekong will eat a grunt’s feet right off his legs…” -Lt. Dan

The downtime between hunting seasons is a great opportunity to take a look at your gear and assess if any of it needs replacing as last weekend I was looking over my Turkey gear and noticed that I needed a few things.

For instance, it’s time for me to retire my trusty ole classic Primos slate call, but I’ll probably get another one similar to it, maybe something like this Knight & Hale Pot Call Kit.

But one BIG item that I’ll definitely need to get this season is a new pair of hunting boots.

Sure, we’ll sit in ground blinds sometimes but the real fun is getting out there and chasing those BIG Toms.

Nothing like it!

As you know, sometimes Turkey hunting can require A LOT of walking. And all that walking is not only good exercise for you but is totally worth it when you get that first gobbler answer your call.

But they don’t make it easy on you so you’ve got to be prepared to call and walk, call and walk until you either see your prey or hear them.

Especially on those days when the Toms aren’t exactly cooperating, you’ll want to be patient and spend some decent time out in the field.

If you have terrible boots and wet socks, we guarantee your time out there will be very short.

Because of that we always make sure we have a great pair of boots that are not only super comfortable but are also waterproof. Walking through dewy grass all morning without waterproofing is a recipe for disaster.

As Lt. Dan was saying, dry socks are KEY!

An added feature we are keen on especially down here in Texas are boots with snake guard protection. Nothin’ll ruin a weekend faster than a negative encounter with rattler.

I’m looking at a new pair of boots like these Guide Gear Men’s Leather Waterproof Side-zip Snake Boots that provide the features I want and they’re on sale now so that helps too.

My current pair of Turkey hunting boots are over 10 years old and the sole is starting to separate. They’ve seen a lot of Turkeys go down but they need to be retired.

Just thought we’d get you thinking about your gear and what you might need for the coming hunting seasons.

Anyway, time to go shopping!
